Revolutionizing Water Treatment For Green Hydrogen Production

Overview

In the pursuit of sustainable energy solutions, a groundbreaking project is underway to establish one of South Korea’s first off-grid, solar-powered green hydrogen production facilities. This ambitious initiative aims to produce 0.6 tons of green hydrogen daily using 100% renewable energy, setting a new benchmark for eco-friendly power generation.

A critical component of this project is the water treatment system. To ensure the efficiency of the water electrolysis system, the facility requires an absolute guarantee of water purity and reliability. DS21 stepped in to provide a cutting-edge solution tailored to these exact requirements.

THE CHALLENGE: MEETING STRICT PURITY DEMANDS FOR ELECTROLYSIS

Producing green hydrogen using an off-grid renewable energy setup presents a unique set of challenges. The electrolysis process demands ultra-pure water to function correctly, making water treatment a central pillar of the operation.

KEY CHALLENGES INCLUDED:
  • Ensuring the consistent supply of ultra-pure water essential for hydrogen electrolysis.
  • Adding a dependable water treatment system to an innovative off‑grid renewable energy setup.
  • Minimizing the environmental footprint while maintaining high operational efficiency.
  • Deploying a compact design to streamline installation and commissioning on-site.

The Solution: A State-of-the-Art Demineralization Package

To address these needs, DS21 successfully designed, delivered, and commissioned a specialized Demineralization Package with a process capacity of 3 cubic meters per hour. The containerized design allows for seamless integration into the project’s existing infrastructure while maintaining operational reliability.

THE ADVANCED MULTI-STAGE TREATMENT SYSTEM FEATURES:

AC Cartridge Filter
Removes organic compounds and free chlorine.

Micro Filter
Captures fine suspended solids to protect downstream membranes.

1st Reverse Osmosis (RO)
Provides primary dissolved solids removal.

2nd Reverse Osmosis (RO)
Further purifies the water to meet strict baseline requirements.

Electrodeionization (EDI)
Acts as the final polishing step to achieve ultra-pure water quality continuously.

By combining these advanced filtration and purification technologies, the system reliably delivers the high-purity water required for sensitive green hydrogen production.

RESULTS: High-Purity Water and Sustainable Operations

DS21’s water treatment system delivered exceptional performance, playing a pivotal role in the success of the green hydrogen facility.

KEY OUTCOMES:
  • High-Purity Water Production: The system consistently produces the ultra-pure water critical for the efficiency and longevity of the water electrolysis system.
  • Streamlined Installation: The compact, containerized design significantly reduced on-site installation and commissioning time, keeping the project on schedule.
  • Sustainable Operations: The system supports the project’s broad sustainability goals by ensuring minimal environmental impact alongside maximum operational efficiency.

This contribution advances the broader vision of renewable energy technologies and proves that robust water treatment can integrate flawlessly with off-grid solar infrastructure.
